I have worked primarily on landscapes since 1988, the year I received a grant to spend the summer painting on the island of Gotland, in the middle of the Baltic. My work has never been an attempt to render the landscape in a realistic way, although those who are familiar with them can discern specific places. What I have been trying to do is to respond to a particular subject by abstracting certain elements from it.
Sometimes landscapes are simplified. The colours are always changed to suit an arbitrary scheme. Formal elements are added, such as outlines, to suit my own plan. What remains, I hope, is the residue of an artistic celebration.
